Genealogy by the States – Week 10 – Virginia

Posted by on Sunday, 10 March, 2013

This week’s blogging prompt is the State of Virginia. Blog about an ancestor or your families connection to Virginia. If you don’t have any connections to Virginia, find a Virginia resource useful for genealogy research to highlight and write about. This week’s prompt runs from 3/10/2013 – 3/16/2013. If you choose to follow along, I would appreciate a mention to the Hidden Genealogy Nuggets website.

As early as some of my ancestors came, my connections to Virginia are extremely limited and somewhat fuzzy. The closest I seem to get is John (Shelton) Chilton my 9th great grand uncle. He died in Virginia.

John seems to have been born about 1650. He was the son of James Shelton and Mary Bathurst. They were my 10th great grandparents. John Shelton died on the 15th of November 1706 in Westmoreland, Virginia.

As my connections to Virginia were very limited this week I tried to have a few extra links to websites and resources which are useful for genealogy research in Virginia. I particularly like Virginia Memories: Digital Collections. I had a blog post about this website some time ago. Here is the link to that post Virginia Memories.

The Cow Hampshire-New Hampshire History Blog is one website I ran across while doing this past weekend’s post about my New Hampshire connections. I found it to be very informative on a great deal of subjects, both about it’s history and it’s people. It doesn’t post as regularly as some other blogs but there are some really good articles.

Here are some past articles;

If you have New Hampshire ancestors, check out this blog.

This week’s blogging prompt is the State of New Hampshire. Blog about an ancestor or your families connection to New Hampshire. If you don’t have any connections to New Hampshire, find a New Hampshire resource useful for genealogy research to highlight and write about. This week’s prompt runs from 3/3/2013 – 3/9/2013. I do not have any ancestors directly connected to New Hampshire. Benjamin Joy is my 1st cousin 8 times removed we share a common ancestor of Joseph Foord. Joseph Foord was his grandfather and my eighth great grandfather.

Benjamin Joy was born as a British subject on the 10th on May in 1719 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. His parents were David Joy and Ruth Ford, His future wife Sarah Cummings was born on the 11th of March in 1722 in Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut. Benjamin and Sarah were married on the 10th of June in 1740 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Benjamin and Sarah would go on to have twelve children, ten of which would live until adulthood. They had four sons who would have been old enough to fight in the revolutionary war.

Benjamin’s wife Sarah died on the 26th of September 1803 in Plainfield, New Hampshire. Benjamin died on the 11th of March 1810. He lived to be 90 years old. They both died as American citizens.

Since my connection to New Hampshire was a little light, I decided to see add a few additional links.
