I have not been able to find any family ties to South Dakota, so I highlight one genealogical resource for this state. The South Dakota State Historical Society has a wonderful collection of online records for the genealogist. Below are a few of those collections.

I do not have any family connections to North Dakota, so I will highlight a resource instead.
The North Dakota GenWeb site seems to be a very good resource to start your search for your North Dakota ancestors. There are several online records which you can reach from this website including the 1885 territorial census. Some of these links will take you off the North Dakota website to another site. For example, when you do a search from the 1885 territorial census, it takes you to North Dakota State University Libraries page, where the search engine is located.
